Out of all of the Pokémon designs I don't like, Cryogonal rests like a crown at the top of said pile, and is probably one reason why the Gen V species has gotten a cold shoulder from many fans. It's sprite is a garbled mess of geometric shapes and angles, along with a cracked face that only a Regice could embrace. In short, it was a Pokémon I didn't expect to get too involved with, and caught it for the sole reason of filling up another slot in my pokédex.

Until I learned that it could be taught Attract. Now, Mew has been the first genderless species to learn that Move since Gen II, as it can learn all TMs by default. Cryogonal, on the other hand, has no such privilegie, and yet it can learn that move anyway. Despite the fact that genderless Pokémon cannot attract opponents at all, regardless of their orientation. Which is a bigger joke than this strip could ever hope to be.

Now, we could probably discuss for hours on end about how the move Attract really function, but my take on it is that it's a psychological move, and not just dousing the opponent with pheromones. This psychic link is what makes it difficult for the opponent to attack during its infatuated state, and why it could easily backfire if it's also holding a Destiny Knot (which never happens because no one uses those). Cryogonal would have no understanding of the two gender roles due to a lack of its own, and so, it has no clue how to manipulate either. But since it can still use the move, it means that it still attempts to get a grasp of it, despite the impossibility to pull off. Which is straight up saddening.

With that said, I still don't like Cryogonal. But I just can't bring myself to hate it.

Such saddness in a Pokemon, I wonder if they fixed that gender thing in the latest Pokrmon game?

Poor Cryogonal.

Staryu and Starmie can also learn it, funnily enough. OTP and all that jazz.

@TouhouShake:
Apparently not.

Expected Ditto to show up. Genderless pokémon can't even breed with their own species, but Ditto manages it.

Well, THAT was interesting. And I thought it was just some snowflake. This strip single-handedly bumped it up to, like, my 10th favorite Pokemon.

Reply

You know, Ditto is genderless, but it has the ability many genderless pokemon do not. I can make babies with any other pokemon. So, can ditto know love or does it just use the other pokemon in lustful, slave like manners?

Reply

02 Dec 2012 12:38 pm

Cryognal cannot have a gender.Truth.

Reply

02 Dec 2012 01:26 pm

Another weird thing about attract: When an infatuated Pokemon gets an attack in on the one it falls in love with, could the attacker be trying something to get the attention of its lover (stalker, "fetish thing")? Attract has some odd potential to be milked... in bizarre ways.

As for the strip itself, Cryogonal shot up to my Top 10 of Pokemon I feel sorry for. It's rather eerie I cannot differentiate sadness or anger in the last few panels because of how their face is designed.

acctualy in nature there are animals such as slugs that have both genders and are thus called genderless or can switch between the 2 at will being genderless does not make one unable to love or procreate it just means they cant be defined as a male or female some animals even only become one or another when its time too mate

Reply

In Pokemon Tabletop Adventures, attract has an out of battle effect of causing wild pokemon to be interested in the pokemon.

Reply

Poor Cryogonal... I like it, happens to be pretty much my favorite Ice-type.

I think the ability to learn attract is so the Pokemon looking at Cyrogonal's mirror-like body would fall in love with itself.

Reply

:D

It's funny 'coz it's true! XD

Seriously though, Cryogonal has slowly been getting up the rankings of my favorite pokemon (don't know why, it just has been, mainly since I found out it can learn rapid spin) but now it is one of my favorite pokemon of all time! Not to mention ice is my favorite type! It's up there in the ranks of delibird! :O

The move attract is not based on opposite genders alone. It can work with certain genderless pokemon because of something shiny that is part of its body. Like how treasure hunters are attracted to gold.

It is not a mess of geometry, it is an ugly snowflake. Part of me just had to say this out loud.

Considering that it's some sort of horrible ice demon, the fact that it cannot know love isn't very surprising.
What a fascinating train of thought this is though.

Reply

You make a very good point. Also, Cryogonal isn't even an animal so naturally there's no need for nookie.

I like how in the last three panels you show two of the same species and then Drilbur and Minccino are paired up and have that last line of text. I think if I were something trying to learn love and see not only this but all of the other weird pairings there can be I would never understand either, like Seviper and Zangoose.

Reply

Well, at least Cryogonal looks like more than a snowflake, whereas ExEGGcute is literally eggs with faces.

Reply

@Charon: That's what I'm arguing with. It's not "literally" eggs. It does LOOK LIKE eggs, I give you that. "Literally" it's seeds (seriously, grass type? Should be pretty obvious).

I just realized, if cryoganol can't mate, then how did the first cryoganol create offspring? In other words, how did the species come into existtance?

Cryogonal gets my respect. You won't see me using it, it's too frail in defence but, it's alright for me. Not all Pokemon are gonna be 'cute and cuddly', y'know.

@lord_aizen66: They're not called genderless, they're hermaphrodites, and Cryogonal isn't a hermaphrodite. I also doubt that a slug has the capacity to love. The strip itself wasn't also meant to be taken seriously, it was meant to be seen as a comedic observation of the fact genderless pokemon can learn moves which are pointless for them.

Reply

14 Dec 2012 06:38 am

@Ballbuster: there we go just did not use the word and there are variations on them some have both parts all the time some can switch while a rare few are truly genderless for a time untell they chose one or the other too mate i was sugjesting that they could be the 3rd type and that the situation of them would not be imposible

Not to be a buzzkill or anything, but Cryogonal's Attract does serve a purpose--to make other genderless Pokemon fall in love with it. It's still fairly useless, though.

There’s a good story about asexuality and gender issues somewhere in there.

Being an asexual agender non-romantic person in a sexual, gender-charged romance obsessed culture is something worth examining.

Since you're trying so hard to rationalyze it, you should know that gender issues are much more complex than that. You can perfectly assume that someone that doesn't relate of any of the binary genders is attracted to someone, because gender identity something entirely different from sexual/afectional attraction. The experience of transgender/transexual individuals and other people that don't fit into masculine/feminine is currently questioning this very binarism. And that's suits perfeclty pokemon world, too.
