Baby don't hurt me

Ironically, it "loves to eat".

Out of all of the Pokémon designs I don't like, Cryogonal rests like a crown at the top of said pile, and is probably one reason why the Gen V species has gotten a cold shoulder from many fans. It's sprite is a garbled mess of geometric shapes and angles, along with a cracked face that only a Regice could embrace. In short, it was a Pokémon I didn't expect to get too involved with, and caught it for the sole reason of filling up another slot in my pokédex.

Until I learned that it could be taught Attract. Now, Mew has been the first genderless species to learn that Move since Gen II, as it can learn all TMs by default. Cryogonal, on the other hand, has no such privilegie, and yet it can learn that move anyway. Despite the fact that genderless Pokémon cannot attract opponents at all, regardless of their orientation. Which is a bigger joke than this strip could ever hope to be.

Now, we could probably discuss for hours on end about how the move Attract really function, but my take on it is that it's a psychological move, and not just dousing the opponent with pheromones. This psychic link is what makes it difficult for the opponent to attack during its infatuated state, and why it could easily backfire if it's also holding a Destiny Knot (which never happens because no one uses those). Cryogonal would have no understanding of the two gender roles due to a lack of its own, and so, it has no clue how to manipulate either. But since it can still use the move, it means that it still attempts to get a grasp of it, despite the impossibility to pull off. Which is straight up saddening.

With that said, I still don't like Cryogonal. But I just can't bring myself to hate it.

02 Dec 2012 08:01 am

Such saddness in a Pokemon, I wonder if they fixed that gender thing in the latest Pokrmon game?

02 Dec 2012 08:07 am

Poor Cryogonal.

02 Dec 2012 08:49 am

Staryu and Starmie can also learn it, funnily enough. OTP and all that jazz.

Apparently not.

02 Dec 2012 09:24 am

Expected Ditto to show up. Genderless pokémon can't even breed with their own species, but Ditto manages it.

02 Dec 2012 09:27 am

02 Dec 2012 10:19 am

@Anon: Ironic enough because Ditto can't breed with itself. @TouhouShake: There's a Poker based pokemon game?

02 Dec 2012 10:51 am

That rollover text, omg XD

02 Dec 2012 11:05 am

Well, THAT was interesting. And I thought it was just some snowflake. This strip single-handedly bumped it up to, like, my 10th favorite Pokemon.

02 Dec 2012 11:42 am

You know, Ditto is genderless, but it has the ability many genderless pokemon do not. I can make babies with any other pokemon. So, can ditto know love or does it just use the other pokemon in lustful, slave like manners?

02 Dec 2012 12:38 pm

Cryognal cannot have a gender.Truth.

02 Dec 2012 01:26 pm

Another weird thing about attract: When an infatuated Pokemon gets an attack in on the one it falls in love with, could the attacker be trying something to get the attention of its lover (stalker, "fetish thing")? Attract has some odd potential to be milked... in bizarre ways.

As for the strip itself, Cryogonal shot up to my Top 10 of Pokemon I feel sorry for. It's rather eerie I cannot differentiate sadness or anger in the last few panels because of how their face is designed.

02 Dec 2012 01:28 pm

acctualy in nature there are animals such as slugs that have both genders and are thus called genderless or can switch between the 2 at will being genderless does not make one unable to love or procreate it just means they cant be defined as a male or female some animals even only become one or another when its time too mate

02 Dec 2012 01:32 pm

In Pokemon Tabletop Adventures, attract has an out of battle effect of causing wild pokemon to be interested in the pokemon.

02 Dec 2012 01:45 pm

Poor Cryogonal... I like it, happens to be pretty much my favorite Ice-type.

02 Dec 2012 02:44 pm

Actually it's just a whore.

02 Dec 2012 04:05 pm

I think the ability to learn attract is so the Pokemon looking at Cyrogonal's mirror-like body would fall in love with itself.

02 Dec 2012 04:08 pm

It's funny 'coz it's true! XD

Seriously though, Cryogonal has slowly been getting up the rankings of my favorite pokemon (don't know why, it just has been, mainly since I found out it can learn rapid spin) but now it is one of my favorite pokemon of all time! Not to mention ice is my favorite type! It's up there in the ranks of delibird! :O

02 Dec 2012 06:28 pm

The move attract is not based on opposite genders alone. It can work with certain genderless pokemon because of something shiny that is part of its body. Like how treasure hunters are attracted to gold.

02 Dec 2012 06:56 pm

Aww! Poor thing! (At first, I didn't realize it was an actual pokemon).

02 Dec 2012 07:36 pm

first Pencil voter

02 Dec 2012 09:49 pm

Cryogonal needs a hug.... Except the body heat would probably melt it. D:

03 Dec 2012 01:30 am

It is not a mess of geometry, it is an ugly snowflake. Part of me just had to say this out loud.

03 Dec 2012 02:09 am

Considering that it's some sort of horrible ice demon, the fact that it cannot know love isn't very surprising.
What a fascinating train of thought this is though.

03 Dec 2012 03:47 am

You make a very good point. Also, Cryogonal isn't even an animal so naturally there's no need for nookie.

03 Dec 2012 05:43 am

Cryogonal <3

I prefer it over 6 eggs with faces any day ;)

03 Dec 2012 07:56 am

That's some pretty deep deepness right there, dawg.

03 Dec 2012 11:35 am

Pokemon are robots anyhow.
They know four moves only.
TMs & HMS are clearly CDs.

03 Dec 2012 12:07 pm

I like how in the last three panels you show two of the same species and then Drilbur and Minccino are paired up and have that last line of text. I think if I were something trying to learn love and see not only this but all of the other weird pairings there can be I would never understand either, like Seviper and Zangoose.

03 Dec 2012 12:10 pm

I now feel like naming a Zangoose and a Seviper Romeo and Juliet

03 Dec 2012 01:50 pm

It's what "it" would have wanted.

03 Dec 2012 05:44 pm

Aww, poor Cryogonal. I still love you. ;__; Even though you'll never know how to love me. =P

I actually like Cryogonal's design. But I also like the designs of Electrode, Stunfisk, and the Vanillite family, so what do I know? =P

03 Dec 2012 07:27 pm

Wow, this point is incredibly sad, I never gave it much thought. I personally hate the move Attract (using it and having it used on me) so if you hadn't pointed this out, I would have never known...

04 Dec 2012 05:18 am

something to think about...

Wait a minute,if cryonganol is genderless, that means its parents are genderless, SO how can it be born?

04 Dec 2012 05:42 am

What i'm saying in the previous comment is,if one of its parents have to be a cryonganol, and it can't mate,How can it be born?
also see my comment in We've all been there.

04 Dec 2012 07:07 am

@Charon: I believe by "eggs" you mean "seeds".

04 Dec 2012 08:01 am

@eworm: I believe by "snowflake" you mean "mineral based organism".

Well, at least Cryogonal looks like more than a snowflake, whereas ExEGGcute is literally eggs with faces.

04 Dec 2012 08:51 am

@Charon: That's what I'm arguing with. It's not "literally" eggs. It does LOOK LIKE eggs, I give you that. "Literally" it's seeds (seriously, grass type? Should be pretty obvious).

04 Dec 2012 09:05 am

@eworm: I was countering the "ugly snowflake" and similar comments.

04 Dec 2012 11:36 am

@eworm: If its seeds then its name doesn't make sense then.

04 Dec 2012 02:18 pm

another thing to think about...

I just realized, if cryoganol can't mate, then how did the first cryoganol create offspring? In other words, how did the species come into existtance?

04 Dec 2012 02:22 pm

Cryogonal gets my respect. You won't see me using it, it's too frail in defence but, it's alright for me. Not all Pokemon are gonna be 'cute and cuddly', y'know.

04 Dec 2012 02:52 pm

@AlchemistWarrior30: Are butterflies flying butter? Names mean nothing, Exeggcute was probably named after its similarity to eggs.

04 Dec 2012 07:51 pm

@eworm: but all pokemon are named after the sounds they make, it would be like real dogs all being named woof

05 Dec 2012 01:21 am

The only reason I dislike Cryogonal is Zinzonlin in Black/White 2, three Cryogonals and you have to fight him TWICE in the Plasma Frigate GRRRR...

05 Dec 2012 06:35 am

@Alerus: Do you play with the sound off all the time? Pokemon saying their names is just one of many stupid things the anime invented. I consider the games to be canon and the anime to be burning in hell.

05 Dec 2012 12:36 pm

Right in the feels, man.

08 Dec 2012 10:20 am

I really thought more people would pay attenion to my previous comments...

08 Dec 2012 11:57 am

I actually really like Cryogonal's design. I hated it at first, but its grown on me, and now it's one of the better looking gen5 Pokemon in my opinion.

09 Dec 2012 03:58 pm

09 Dec 2012 03:58 pm

09 Dec 2012 03:58 pm

09 Dec 2012 04:00 pm

I totally get why there are genderless legendaries, cuz if they could have kids instead of being immortal, that would take the edge off of it. But i feel so sorry! At least crygnol (or however you spell it) isn't a robot. There there. You can never date a snowcone now.

11 Dec 2012 09:51 am

Did you know

that Cryogonal is based on a mirror? Teaching it Attract would mean that it causes the opponent to fall in love with their own reflection.

11 Dec 2012 06:49 pm

Ok, this is too far....

PAY ATTENTION TO MY COMMENTS ALREADY! (note, not trying to troll here.)

12 Dec 2012 03:51 am

@he who has no name:
Attention starved much?

13 Dec 2012 09:11 am

@he who has no name:
Someone probably put his mirror in the freezer.

14 Dec 2012 04:32 am

@lord_aizen66: They're not called genderless, they're hermaphrodites, and Cryogonal isn't a hermaphrodite. I also doubt that a slug has the capacity to love. The strip itself wasn't also meant to be taken seriously, it was meant to be seen as a comedic observation of the fact genderless pokemon can learn moves which are pointless for them.

14 Dec 2012 06:38 am

@Ballbuster: there we go just did not use the word and there are variations on them some have both parts all the time some can switch while a rare few are truly genderless for a time untell they chose one or the other too mate i was sugjesting that they could be the 3rd type and that the situation of them would not be imposible

15 Dec 2012 05:32 am

@he who has a name: a bit, because i have some good ideas, and they kinda hit the nail on the head.

16 Dec 2012 12:33 pm

@contradiction123: Just what I was going to say!

17 Dec 2012 06:19 pm

You know what?!

When a genderless pokemon uses attract it will only effect another genderless Pokemon.

18 Dec 2012 09:54 am

Not to be a buzzkill or anything, but Cryogonal's Attract does serve a purpose--to make other genderless Pokemon fall in love with it. It's still fairly useless, though.

18 Dec 2012 12:23 pm

miccino and drillbur???WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO???!!!

19 Dec 2012 12:12 pm

Just to point out that there aren't only two genders IRL. Pokemon at least tries to reflect that. If everyone could stop being so cisnormative ...

20 Dec 2012 06:02 pm

There’s a good story about asexuality and gender issues somewhere in there.

Being an asexual agender non-romantic person in a sexual, gender-charged romance obsessed culture is something worth examining.

20 Dec 2012 09:05 pm

At first I was sad, then I laughed because of the Cryogonal's unchanging face xD Still rather depressing, though. Perhaps that's why they're so rare, because they are so curious?

21 Dec 2012 03:40 pm

"Just to point out that there aren't only two genders IRL. Pokemon at least tries to reflect that. If everyone could stop being so cisnormative ..."
I'm surprised it took that long for one of these comments to show up. Pretty sure "gender" in Pokemon means biological sex, you dip. No need to get your social justice in everything.

22 Dec 2012 05:23 am

good job,except....

@I'm the Guest:I don't think sticking a mirror in a freezer would work unless it was a radioactive fridge.

22 Dec 2012 06:20 am

Since you're trying so hard to rationalyze it, you should know that gender issues are much more complex than that. You can perfectly assume that someone that doesn't relate of any of the binary genders is attracted to someone, because gender identity something entirely different from sexual/afectional attraction. The experience of transgender/transexual individuals and other people that don't fit into masculine/feminine is currently questioning this very binarism. And that's suits perfeclty pokemon world, too.

22 Dec 2012 08:11 am

In that last panel, it looks like Crygonal is going to brutally murder the Minccino, the Drilbur, and the egg.

22 Dec 2012 04:43 pm

@he who has no name: Really? You comment yourself to make it seem like people are commenting you so other people do so? I know that no one really looks at the names of the posters, but dude! Attention hog much?

22 Dec 2012 11:33 pm

@AlchemistWarrior30: Or Skitty and Wailord.

24 Dec 2012 05:44 am

@Gamining King: i had a feeling a comment like yours would show up.-_- just one comment, everyone thinks you're a troll.

24 Dec 2012 02:24 pm

Psh, I'll stick to the first PMD where attract works on everyone and everything.

28 Dec 2012 01:12 pm

@Anon: I totally agree. also good for duplicating male starter pokemon

28 Dec 2012 01:19 pm

@he who has no name: FINALLY SOMEONE who thinks like a scientist!

28 Dec 2012 01:29 pm

@Pokemariosoniclover: An even WIERDER couple is Swoobat and Stoutland

28 Dec 2012 11:14 pm

Comics like this are my favorite thing about Rare Candy Treatment <3

02 Jan 2013 04:29 am

@he who has no name: "I just realized, if cryoganol can't mate, then how did the first cryoganol create offspring? In other words, how did the species come into existtance?"

Aesexuality? Cloning? :/

03 Jan 2013 09:39 pm

@Frezgle: And there aren't only two sexes IRL, so you're still wrong. Take a proper biology course and try again.

04 Jan 2013 08:58 am

I actually really like Cryogonal's design, but that's just me.

07 Jan 2013 02:44 pm

Dude, Genderless pokemon can understand, all they have to do is attract other genderless pokeman like... metagross.

08 Jan 2013 04:55 pm

Shedinja is also genderless and can learn Attract. Likely since it can evolve from Nincada, which does have a gender.

09 Jan 2013 09:28 am

This is one of your best strips.

25 Jan 2013 04:10 am

I know this is an old comic and I stayed out of loop for some time but man... you seem to have remarkable talent for making captivating points out of very common matters. I commend you for that.

04 Mar 2013 09:00 pm

It's because Cryogonal is based on a mirror, the idea would be a mirror would attract narcissistic people.

05 Mar 2013 09:26 pm

NOW i feel bad for the poor thing

19 Mar 2013 06:34 pm

Baby don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! No more!

11 Apr 2013 03:58 pm

I wanna know what love is...

11 May 2013 10:17 am

@he who has no name: It might seem like magic, but it is really science. And magic.
