I really need to get better at prioritizing ideas I like that others have submitted. This one has been sitting on my to-strip-list for a year. A year! That's like ... one year! Disgraceful. I will make an effort to clear my list of approved submissions from now on, so if anyone feel that they have something worthy to be on this site, then shoot me a message and you can see it realised within a month.
Airspace suggested this strip based on the pokédex entries about Eevee which in the three early generations clearly states that the elementary stones emit radiation, which makes you wonder about the possible effects those items would have on humans given enough time. Particularly while carried around in a backpack.
You wouldn't need to know about those entries though, and I'm fairly certain the info box in the first panel should help anyone get all of the pieces in place. If not, speak up about it! I'm so used to comments made by well-informed pokémon fans that I sometimes forget how high I should raise the bar.
If anyone reading this strip is or knows someone suffering from cancer and feel that this joke is upsetting, I apologize in advance. The punchline is not that cancer is a funny thing. I have a coworker going through treatment right now and I truly wish she'll be alright. For those of you dealing with that disease directly or indirectly right now, you have my sympathies.
If the punchline isn't that cancer is a funny thing, I have trouble finding the punchline.
Getting incurably sick by radiation in general is a funny thing then?
@The_mad_one: Just about as funny as being set on fire, vaporised alive or enduring an explosion.
It's not the result itself, it's rather about expecting one result and instead being shown a complete opposite one. Call it irony or cruel humor, but you'd be surprised by how how much comedic material makes use of this procedure. To make a joke without making someone or something a victim would be optimal, but sadly, that's rarely the case.
But your reaction is understandable. Just wanted to throw in my 5 cents.
My family has had plenty of bouts with cancer, some surviving, some not. That doesn't detract from this strip though, I think it's very clever. Not many people remember that evolutionary stones are radioactive according to the original games. This strip just exposes that little bit of information in a clever way. If you want to get upset, get upset at a late 90s children's game that had drunk people, radioactive stones you could collect, little kids that traveled the world with no adult supervision, and animals fighting each other constantly at the player's beck and call. I don't see a reason to be upset at the person who points that out to us...
@Bumbazzle: My grandpa died of lung cancer and I had a cousin that went through cancer and survived... and I laughed my ass off with this comic. Just showing my support.
No one here is upset (yet).
Me and I think EviceTurboMan as well just don't consider this page funny.
Unlike the aforementioned fire, vaporization and explosions, cancer involves no frantic action. Just lying still. Slowly dying in pain.
No offense intended or taken. I just think this page is a bit of a miss is all.
@The_mad_one: It was meant more for people who read the strip in the future and get upset. ;)
I will admit that it's more of a clever strip than a humorous one. I still like it though.
i had cancer, and this is hysterical. keep up the good work cause if you can't take a joke, F**k off and learn to laugh
My mom died of cancer (non-hodgekins lymphoma, caused by AIDS) and I still find this joke funny.
In my opinion, there's not a single joke on earth that won't offend SOMEBODY.
Hell, I once knew somebody who got pissed over "Knock, Knock" jokes because their door knocked had been stolen.
Some people just don't understand that a joke is just that, a joke. It's not meant to be serious.
At least it was only a leaf stone. Think of what any of the other evolution stones could have done.
Is there some way to see old strips? If not. do you intend to make a simple way to navigate here?
BTW, great comics :) !
@Noam: Archive, top of the page.
I loved this comic. I wonder what would happen if you had ALL the stones...
I recently came up with a theory on how those stones became irradiated. Y'know how there was a war in pre-game history? What if it was a nuke war? The radiation could've seeped into the Stones and mutated the life into the Pokemon we know today.
@Noam: There are buttons right below the comic strip, two of them labelled "First" and "Back". Click on them.
as someone who actually had cancer, I offically declare this joke to be funny, haters be damned.
Jeez, this comment section is morbid.
Hhhheeehhhe thats a good one XD ive been wateing for some evolution stone jokes :)
I think a good alternative to this would be the character getting radiation cancer from Deoxys due to the radiation of space... that or a rayquaza taking a trainer above the ozone layer and ultimately suffocating them.
Trainer has evolved into bulbasaur.
Keep it up
Pretty weak in comparison to some of your others. I would put this on the same lame scale that your chandeleur/chandler comic is.
Good comic, would be better but unfortunately I'm pedantic enough that your apparent misunderstanding of the word radiation irritates me more than the comic makes me laugh :p
@Bumbazzle & Shoop-da-Whoop: Can't see it... https://picasaweb.google.com/112487761754605180135/May242012#5746048116965816114
Lol, stupid radiation. He needs a lead-lined bag or something.
@321TaTer: yeah. i agree. i think what makes it kinda gross is how the green shrubbery grows out of his back. makes me feel kinda uncomfortable for some reason
@The_mad_one: lol, you just needed to write something, didn't you?
It's all going to offend everybody. I enjoyed it because it made my eyes bug out of my skull. And then I began to worry for all my Pokemon trainer characters.
Hey, radiation has caused people to become superheros before. I see Leafman in the making, making robbers leaf people alone.
... I'm just not a very funny person. I laugh at everything, but I clearly would fail as a comedian. Kudos to you for making radiation funny.
What? Nobody else has plants growing out their back?
It wouldn't even have occurred to me that this could be offensive to anyone until i read the comments.
Are people pokemon, or animals???? and could humans evolve to? Maybe that's why he has leaves growing out of his back...
I'm going to put in my two cents worth here: While I didn't ROFLOLMAO at this comic like I have for others, I still found it funny and very clever, even though my grandmother had cancer (maybe I found this strip funny because of that). While this strip is funny, it uses a much darker humor than your other strips - and let's face it, comic artist NEED to be able to do dark humor even if they never use it. As others have said before, you can't tell any joke with out offending someone, so let some people say "It's not funny" and chalk it up to people 'having a different sense of humor'. This was a great strip, and it shows that you can do dark humor as well as out right slapstick. Bumbazzle, just keep producing your comics like you have been - making jokes about Pokemon concepts you find odd - whether we laugh with you or not.
Yep, this guy fell for the old keep a radioactive stone plan that Lex Luthor tried with kryptonite (and failed). That's totally what this comic was making me think of after reading it.
@The_mad_one: ...noooooo the funny part is where he's carrying around a radioactive rock in his bag and doesn't think that maybe that could have unfortunate consequences. -.-
It's not about hurr durr cancer or getting mutated somehow is funny, it's that the game -clearly says that the stones emit radiation-, and the guy just -sticks it in his backpack-.
He's turning into a Bulbasaur!!!
I didn't even know that stones were radioactive. Wait, what about my soulsilver file when i had 6 fire stones, 4 water stones, 2 leaf stones, 2 dusk stones, and 1 dawn stone? My guy didn't turn into a monster with a firey right arm, water-made left arm, left leg made of plant-live, right leg made of darkness, and the rest of his bod made of light. Maybe he was immune. Or maybe it only affects pokemon and this Lucas was a ditto. THE EMPIRE SHALL RETURN!! O_o (If you don't get it, see 'the art of deciet'.)
okay im just wondering but im pretty sure in one of the Pokemon games u can do exactly this and like go explore in caves and u know go mining and stuff i was wondering if im right or not? plz answer.
@wolfboy101: Yes you can! The first two panels takes place in the Underground, which can be found in the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games. Hence why I chose Lukas.
My sister is going through treatment, but hell, this strip is so clever that I cannot be upset by any means. Hillarious!
@captainhelensparrow: Chandelure Bing was actually incredibly clever.
@Flare: Not only was it poorly drawn, it was a very poor pun.
If it was four Fire Stones, think he might've become part Cyndaquil?
So THIS is what rare candy treatement is meant to cure!
@Gamining King: You have to admit that would have been awesome though. I sense a new superhero in the making. THE THING HAS NOTHING ON EVOLUTION STONE MAN!
@Guest: The alt text sais the correct treatment is weedkillers. The Rare Candy Treatment is a fast cure to the Temporary Darwinian Evodeficency, a strange mutation that is present in 100% of the total Magikarp population, that consists in an inibition of it's mental and physical growth but also in an intensive growth of the immune system. It is an adaptation that serves the purpose of growing newborns in a state invulnerable to an ancient virus that almost exterminated the Magikarp species 100000 years ago, but that in present times is a danger for their species, and also a major annoyance for pokémon trainers.
You should do a comic about how Ditto can mate with any breedable Pokemon. I know you'll come up with something!
@captainhelensparrow: Eh. Your opinion I guess.
@pokeman92: I also have had several family members with cancer and enjoyed this comic. I agree with you completely.
just give him an Everstone
Wow nice comic man!
how about creating a comic strip where eevee is exposed to all the stones at once?
This one really is pretty funny, I don't know why there are so many trolls flocking to this one strip when its clear that the punchline is not that cancer is funny
@The_mad_one: My sister died of cancer. I still laughed at this comic.
THE PUNCHLINE IS NOT THAT CANCER IS FUNNY! THE PUNCHLINE IS THAT THERE IS AN IDIOT WHO CARRIES AROUND RADIOACTIVE STONES WITHOUT REALIZING THEY COULD HURT HIM! STOP TROLLING THIS COMIC!
@EviceTurboMan: Radiation is bad for you. It can cause cancer. The stones are stated to have radiation. In real life, radioactive materials are treated with utmost care, with people working with these kinds of things dressed up like spacemen crossed with Eskimos. Here, ten-year-old kids just shove them into backpacks, with no ill effects at all.
