I spend most of my strips pointing out ludicrous details or whimsical mechanics within these games, but some times, I crave for something more. To go deeper beyond the surface, speak of the structures hiding below, and ellaborate on the very history this bizarre world has accumulated in its quest to become what it is.
Until that time comes, have this strip instead.
Pre-battle quotes has always been a minor source of entertainment while playing, with some being appropriate, some untopical, and some just plain confusing. In a place where everyone could be a trainer with terrible communication skills, any greeting could be a challenge, so it's only obvious that experience will have to take its toll eventually on our main protagonist. Unless it's the opposite situation, where the player simply replies to every conversation by throwing his pokémon onto the field, forcing the same response. But I disgress.
It's been a good while since I've made a wordy strip, so pardon if the arrangement of the text boxes may be imperfect. And in case any of you wonder, slapping people with gloves is the only true way of challenging someone to a duel, leaving any other method unworthy of the situation.
I always thought the "I like short"'s Guy was kind of creepy...
@ThalLeal: Hey! You're not wearing shorts!
I've been reading your comic for awhile since talking with JHall on Facebook...figure I might as well add it to my favs on here XD
I actually think it's part of the Japanese culture - the trainer is in the role of a samurai, and hence it is a matter of honour to challenge another trainer, to respond to challenges, and to be ready for same.
That always bothered me. Pokemons the only game where a little kid in shorts tried to jump me for not wearing shorts
Ah yes I remember the I like shorts guy.
the bug catcher. his eyes disturb me and will peek into my nightmares.
P.S. Ethan! How could you be so mean to adorable little eyes boy.
P.S.S. The eyes of all of the characters tell the story.
I like in D/P, near the beginning there's a youngster that goes, "Our eyes met, so battle we must!"
Immediately thought of Yoda.
They're comfy and easy to wear!
Expect the unexpected.
@Yaqirah: "big catcher"? xD
You want creepy?
Go talk to the Bikers on the north side of Route 17, just west of Celadon City.
Pedobear's got nothing on these guys.
Can you make a comic on how a Pokemon such as Herdier can use Intimidate against a Pokemon like Reshiram or Zekrom?
This is really good!
Not to criticize your art- which I like and find your sense of humor fresh and amusing- but dude looks a little chubby in that last panel XD
lol im playing pokemon RIGHT NOW and i can never tell when the npc's are going to bitch and force me to battle them or when they just want to talk.
and dont even get me started on trying to figure out which ones actually have something IMPORTANT to say
Wait. Where did the "I like shorts" come from? XD
@CayCory: He did do one similar to your idea. Check in the archives, comic 3
@ThalLeal: I had that quote with a picture of Po-Ju (don't look him up...trust me,) as a signature on Gaia Online for years. It was sad how many people knew the quote.
@Guest: I actually think it's scarier how many people recognize Po-Ju >.>
Which two guys thought it would be a good idea to make their pets fight against each other and thus start the trend of pokemon battles? Also what did they call them before the introduction of pokeballs? After all, pokemon stands for pocket monsters, and before pokeballs, there was no way to fit them into your pockets.
Lol, I thought this was gonna be a "I like shorts" joke but was pleasantly surprised :D. Also, anyone else find the Veteran dude in B + W in the Nimbasa stadium a bit odd? He comes up to your character, a pre-teen, and says "Mmmm...you smell like an athlete" or something like that :/. Creepy...
i too have noticed this, it seems strange for people to casually walk over and comment on the weather one second, and to be in the heat of battle, the next
Well, you can tell when someone wants to battle when the background music changes. Unfortunately, there is technically no background music.
I like how the trainers initiate battles in a zig-zag way. Ok, the guy likes shorts, what does that have to do with a trainer battle? XD
In pokemon black, I put a patrat to sleep using musharna's yawn and proceeded to attack it with musharna's psywave and it said patrat avoided the attack. I know this sounds similar to your "Sleep Tackle" comic, but it's an idea. You could also do a comic about the wonders of how a pokemon can flee when it's frozen.
I've heard so many parodies about Trainers (such as why they just stand there, waiting for you to walk in front of them), but their challenge text, that's a first!
Someday, the very first word a child will say will be considered a challenge to a battle!
This. Is. BRILLIANT! I laughed pretty hard at the punchline. The intricate setup leading to those three sweet words... I don't know how you come up with this stuff.
@Aninnymouse: Hey! I wear shorts every day of the year. Even when it's cold!
there are so many weird going ons in pokemons like the names, i saw one and it looked like gibberish
@DeafTrainer: Maybe they're on a slope?
See? That was MY joke I told all my friends. Now they are going to think I stole it from here.
Lmao, I love this! Its awesome!
Just came back to say I love this one, it's your best! =D
@C.A.T: Fire red, somewhere in the forests. I can not remember which forest
You should've had that kid say, " I like shorts! Their comfy and easy to ware! " ( Bad grammar and spelling, I know. )
