As much as I appreciate new features and different approaches, Voltorb Flip never worked out for me. It's sort of like Minesweeper, with the only difference that the card numbers are useless.
Edit: I've gotten some really strong responses for this comic, so seems like I need to make some amends.
The comments defending the mechanics of Voltorb Flip made me look closer on tutorials in both the game and the webs, and lo and behold, while the card numbers meant zero in regards to voltorb locations, the importance of the total row/column value had completely passed me by. So they're not useless, and thus, I apologise.
However, that wasn't the point of the comic. Well, not entirely. Sort of. Either way, it was more centered around first impressions, the large changes from the slots, and how Mr Game is......unusually excited about it to the point which I found it to be creepy. So while my author comment triggered bad reactions, that wasn't my intention.
Nonetheless, I've gotten just about equal numbers of reactions from both sides of this game feature, so whether or not one would enjoy this strip is entirely up to personal preferences. Nothing more to it.
The original idea was to make him say how he'd just BUY the coins instead, but seeing as you apparently can't do that in HG/SS, I had to revise the setup a bit. Hope it still works.
In other news, Rare Candy Treatment is now also available on Piperka. While the site appearance doesn't look like much now, it provides a neat feature for those of us who doesn't catch up with comics through RSS or other immediate updating services, but instead visits the sites now and then. But instead of keeping them all as bookmarks and search down the page you last visited, Piperka keeps track of how many new pages there are since your last read but also provides a link to where you last left off.
It takes a while to set up the comics you want to follow (depending on how many they are), but I recommend it to everyone who track their webcomics with bookmarks.
I had the best luck EVAR with voltorb flip XD
And the numbers help to narrow it down a bit... Before you have to guess >_>
XD I'd loved Voltorb Flip
never worked out for me too, i also never understood minesweeper.
I understood how to play both... I just suck at these game like no bodies business.
Haha, he really should have invested his money elsewhere...
The number next to the Voltorb is the amount of Voltorbs in the row/column and the other one is the sum of the multipliers in the row/column. It's still a way better minigame than the slots where you can only throw your coins away with no gain.
eh, it's not that bad of a game. You could always find a site that does the math for you and tells you which cards to flip. made it all the way to lv. 7 cause of it.
This one is great!
I haven't played this minigame but if it's like minesweeper, the numbers aren't useless, far from it. They help you pinpoint exactly where mines are if you know how to read them. Once you figure "hey this square has a mine" you right-click it to flag it.
I found it really easy to work out. Got up to level 8 or something. But working it out saps all the fun out of it...
Voltorb flip would have been OK for me if you could actually buy the coins.
Instead, I was up all night on voltorb flip to get a Dratini.
I don't get it.
I hated this game. I had about the same reaction when I walked in. I looked around, went wtf is this?, and tried it for a few mins. After throwing my hands up I never went back.
They replaced the slots because after awhile, they finally realized that young kids shouldn't be 'gambling'.
I was annoyed that I couldn't just buy the coins while there, but I didn't mind. It just a lot of playing to get the coins I wanted.
I didn't like it at first, but then I figured out how to play it and then it grew on me
It's basically a logic puzzle that required very little luck
The problem was not the game - it was the removal of the coin/cash exchange service. Took ages to get enough coins for anything.
.......I've logged more hours on Voltorb Flip than on the actual game..... I... actually like it more. x_____x it's so addictive. I think I've bought, like, five dratinis. (Also: I'm stuck on the last gym. Damn Dragon lady and no trainers or high-enough-level pokemon to help me level...)
(I NEVER played the slots. I HATED THEM! You have no control over it whatsoever, and I'd get frustrated. Who'd want to just throw coins in and HOPE you get it when you never do? Voltorb Flip on the other hand... it's all you. It's using your mind and your strategy. It's only rarely luck. It's all about you. Just watch a youtube video or two to learn.)
Yeah I really got tip off when Ive seen the new game conner was just a table and a man claiming to play with you. Its already weird that you can walk up in anyones house why would you want to play a game with me?
Haha thats great XD
Why does everyone hate voltorb flip? It was way better than slot machines...
Is there any strategy involved to a slot machine at all? I've never seen it if there is...Someone please tell me so I can stop failing at them...
And the numbers are very useful. o3o
...Most of the time.
I didn't like slots, but I kind of liked the roulette in the 3rd gen games, I can't remember if there were any in the 2nd gen though...
I must admit I was a little disappointed when I saw no slot machines, but recently I figured out how to do Voltorb flip, and it's really fun!
Oh C'mon! Voltorb Flip is AWESOME! It still rages you to insanity when you get in a 50%/50% chance to win, but it's as awesome as sudoku!
Voltorb Flip FTW!
I dislike Voltorb Flip quite a lot, not just because I'm really horrible at games similar to minesweeper, but it's practically the only method of obtaining coins in HeartGold and SoulSilver, at least in America. I find it disappointing that Japan got to keep the classic Game Corner and all we got was this failurific attempt at a strategy minigame. :<
I ended up playing voltorb flip more than I did the rest of the game...
I disagree with the idea the numbers are useless. It requires luck, but they do help. (Compare Voltorb numbers with the total number-it can help with locating "all 1/voltorb" rows and "rows that actually have 2's and 3's.")
It's no Distortion World/BW Victory Road, but it's something.
I would argue that it's better than the slot machines, if only because it relies "less" on luck and more on developing skill. Pokemon Black and White probably have the best deal of all, however: no annoying coin minigames required to get TMs/complete the Pokedex whatsoever.
Not the best comic-I know you can do better though.
Awwww, now you made me sad
I recently discovered your website and I've got to say you have some of the wittiest comics I've ever read in regards to Pokemon. It's really nice to have poke artists like you.
I hated Voltorb Flip. Completely ridiculous and nigh-impossible to be very successful at. It also didn't help that you knew they only took the slots out because overprotective idiot parents kept going "OH EM GEE GAMBLING IS EVIL!!!!" Guh.
I somehow guessed the comments would be full of anti/pro slots posts. As said here already, the numbers certainly aren't useless, they're your tool to winning the game :/
"eh, it's not that bad of a game. You could always find a site that does the math for you and tells you which cards to flip. made it all the way to lv. 7 cause of it."
I'd call that laziness/cheating but meh.
"Why does everyone hate voltorb flip? It was way better than slot machines..."
Because they fail at it and they know it, so they decide it's better to say it's crap instead of even trying to learn it.
"The Casino = EASY TRIPLE SEVENS! EASY PORYGON!
Minesweep = Moneyswept. Hacks for Porygon."
You cannot lose coins in Voltorb Flip. But you can lose it all in the slots.
"you knew they only took the slots out because overprotective idiot parents kept going "OH EM GEE GAMBLING IS EVIL!!!!""
No, they were taken out to prevent a PEGI rating of 12+; most probably it would've been reflected on the ESRB rating as well. Nothing to do with anyone's parents.
The replacement was totally to keep the rating for the game. Gambling was determined to give an auto M rating. The slots corner would be gambling so Pokemon would be rated M. Could you imagine Pokemon rated M? So they replaced the classic slots with this to keep their normal rating. Though I have to agree that it's strange.
Author comment edited.
I never play Voltorb Flip; worst minigame ever. It's basically, "I'm gonna flip my first tile now..." *EXPLODE* "&$^#!"
@Soulweaver ESRB are retarded, no offense. Seriously, gambling would be an auto-M? WTH, Pokemon doesn't have profanity, gore, violence, or sexual contact in it. People are becoming so protective of their kids, I mean, how is Halo even rated M? It would be more logical to increase the rating by one level if it involved gambling. Tons of people play poker but few gamble, so most of us know the risks. How did Nick ensure the hiatus of Invader Zim because of Bloody GIR but Icarly has people saying 'Holy Crap!', 'Sexy' and blood appearing commonly on the show? And both are for kids! WTH!
I realize I'm a little late to the conversation, but I felt the comic could have used another panel between the third and fourth. There was so much text in the first three that the last one felt rushed, like he goes from smiling to crying in an instant. A fifth panel would have been awkward to fit on the page, though, so you may have already considered this.
Loving the comics, though. I felt this way too; I was expecting this big thing, but there was one table with tiles. An alright game, but a bit of a letdown.
Yeah you just dont touch the lines where the voltorb count and the points add up to five. It means that here all ones. also, go for low risk cards first, and DONT press quit! Also I couldent figure out how to play till after i finished the game -o- I thought you had to talk to him, not the damn table XD
Its down to some basic math. I think it's a GREAT improvement, compared to random winnings from the other games prior to this. Most kids playing it probably don't want to be 'working it out' and it doesnt have an arcade feel, but playing it got me coins FAST.
Poor guy D:
I miss the slot machines too.
Poor guy, This makes me want to play the flip games.
STOP THE BLAH MADNESS!
I miss the slot machines!!!!
I miss being able to buy coins.
I have a ton of money, but nothing to spend it on, and the game corner has stuff I want. It's rather frustrating.
I think that guy accidentally glued himself to that seat and is just lonely.
ugh, such a rubbish game! you get like 1 coin per minute, i too miss the slot machines :(
god lord i love that game. i stopped making progress cus i would just play that. ;_;
personally i never liked coins so i loved making fun of them thx for a good LOL
Wow, I loved Voltorb flip! It's the only time I was ever able to easily get enough coins to get everything. I hate all the time necessary in playing the slot machines.
@DNK: Me too!
almost as bad as mr pokemon pining away for rapidash... yuck... he must be from the midwest.
I thought Mr. Game's thumb was missing in the first panel for a moment...o.O
Still, this was funny. :D
I personally LOVE voltorb flip, but Mr.Game is creepily desperate.
I had trouble at first and then it just kinda clicked. I was never good at minesweeper, but It got to a point when I was pretty good at this and saved the 2100 for dratini faster than I would've with the slots. But I do feel like the slots were at their best in gen 2. Seeing chansey on the screen was ALWAYS satisfying.
Really? I didn't get the game at first, but now that I know how to play, I love it! :D
@Julian: I found Mr. Pokemon pining over his beloved rapidash to be quite a touching part of the game. And it's not only midwesterners who can have affection for their equines.
As for the comic...I'm on both sides of the idea. I dont mind the card flip but hate that I couldnt just outright buy the darn coins from the guy to get a bloody dratini. I just want my tiny slender dragon, creepy guy on the sofa who wants to watch me flip cards! Give me dratini and I'll flip some dang cards for you!
I decide to judge the worth of a row or column by looking at the number of coins I can earn and then the voltorb numbers. If I can see that the only cards worth anything are ones, I don't touch them. Probblem solved!
Yeah, I understand the rules and such, but I just never had the patience to actually go through the logic xD
Actually I read one thing that the reason why they took out the slots is because in some places gambling is illegal. So what they did was reolace the slots so they could sel the game in those places that prohibit gambling. learned about it on this vid someone made with a bunch of poke facts.I think it's called Poke trivia or something
*Cue Titanic Music*
@Blue Rose: I FIGURED OUT HOW TO WIN I THINK! :D FIND SOMEONE WHO LOVES AND IS GREAT AT MINESWEEPER THEN MAKE THEM DO IT FOR YOU XD easy peasy pikachu squeezy whith a cherry on top
Instead of the very very creepy veiw, consider this, he made money off of people buying chips and occasionally resseling those chips. Now he probably operates like the pokecenter, which if I'm correct just gets enough money to keep on going.
I hated that game
